The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced the appointment of former Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, as chairman of its Presidential Primary Election Committee ahead of the party’s 2027 presidential primaries.

The party also named former Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, as chairman of the Presidential Primary Election Appeal Committee.

The appointments were contained in a notice signed by the APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru.

As part of preparations for the presidential primaries, the ruling party deployed 37 coordinators and collation officers across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Several prominent APC figures were assigned to coordinate activities in their respective states, including:

among others.

APC Primaries to Hold Across 8,809 Wards

The APC stated that its presidential primaries will hold simultaneously across the country’s 8,809 wards on Saturday.

The exercise is expected to produce the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 elections in what political observers describe as a likely endorsement of the incumbent administration.

APC Adopts Direct Voting System

Under the procedure released by the party, all registered APC members across the wards will be allowed to vote directly for their preferred presidential aspirant.

The move represents a departure from the traditional delegate-based system that previously restricted voting to selected party delegates and officials.

Political analysts believe the direct voting system could:

  • increase participation within the party
  • reduce elite control over nominations
  • strengthen internal party legitimacy

How Results Will Be Collated

According to the APC guidelines:

  • ward results will first be collated at local government levels
  • state coordinators and collation officers will aggregate state results
  • final state results will then be submitted to the Presidential Primary Election Committee in Abuja

All collation processes are expected to be completed on the same day as the primaries.

What This Means for 2027 Elections

The constitution of the APC presidential primary committees signals the ruling party’s full preparation for the 2027 elections.

The nationwide structure and direct voting model suggest that the APC is aiming to:

  • strengthen internal party participation
  • consolidate party unity
  • prepare early for the presidential contest

The exercise is also expected to shape political alignments and opposition strategies ahead of the elections.

With the appointment of Anyim Pius Anyim and Aminu Masari to head key presidential primary committees, the APC has intensified preparations for its 2027 presidential primaries.

As the party moves toward selecting its presidential candidate through a nationwide voting process, attention will now focus on how the primaries unfold and what impact they may have on Nigeria’s broader political landscape ahead of 2027.
