The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has revealed that Peter Obi was surprised by Aisha Yesufu’s decision to contest for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senate seat.
The party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Enekweizu, said Obi had preferred that the activist and politician contest for the AMAC/Gwari House of Representatives seat ahead of the 2027 general election.
He made the disclosure while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday.
Peter Obi Wanted Aisha Yesufu to Contest for House of Representatives
According to Enekweizu, the party had held discussions with Peter Obi on building consensus around candidates for various elective positions.
He disclosed that Obi personally informed him that he wanted Aisha Yesufu to contest for the AMAC/Gwari Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.
However, he said he was surprised to later discover through social media reports that Yesufu had decided to pursue a Senate seat instead.
NDC Says Aisha Yesufu Rejected House of Representatives Ticket
The NDC secretary further revealed that the party’s national leader met with Yesufu on two occasions and appealed to her to run for the House of Representatives.
According to him, Yesufu rejected the proposal.
Enekweizu claimed that the activist insisted on contesting for the Senate seat and maintained that nothing would stop her from pursuing the position.
He added that the party subsequently allowed her to participate in the Senate primary election.
Aisha Yesufu Lost the Primary Election
The NDC disclosed that Yesufu eventually lost the primary election for the FCT Senate seat.
Enekweizu said she was not the only supporter of Peter Obi who participated in the party’s primaries.
According to him, 23 aspirants purchased expression of interest and nomination forms for the AMAC/Gwari Federal Constituency election.
He noted that several aspirants who lost their respective primaries had reached out to the party with complaints and grievances.
