Otu Warns Bekwarra LG Boss Against Abuse of Power

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has cautioned the newly inaugurated Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, Hon. Egbung Odama, against ruling in an authoritarian manner, reminding him that public office is about service, not personal power.

Governor Otu gave the charge while administering the oath of office to the council chairman at his office, stressing that leadership is rooted in responsibility and accountability, particularly at the grassroots level.

According to the governor, “Public office is not an opportunity to dominate or act like an emperor. It is a platform to serve the people. Leadership demands responsibility, compassion, and accountability, especially to the most vulnerable members of society.”

He described local government as the tier of governance closest to the people and a critical driver of grassroots development, noting that the All Progressives Congress (APC) places strong emphasis on effective local administration because of its direct impact on communities and livelihoods.

Otu urged the new chairman to govern with humility, foster unity, and remain committed to service, expressing confidence in his ability to deliver meaningful development to the people of Bekwarra.

In his response, Hon. Egbung Odama assured residents of Bekwarra and Cross River State of his determination to lead with diligence and integrity. He pledged that his administration would operate within established rules, uphold transparency, and prioritise the welfare of the people.

Odama officially replaces Hon. Theresa Ushie, who was reported to have resigned from office, a claim she has since denied.
